Martin Luther did not invent the catechism, but his use of it forever changed the Church. In addition to the Small Catechism presented here in several forms, you will also find Luther's Large Catechism.

  1. Luther's Small Catechism - Also known as Luther's little instruction book. Luther here explained the parts of Christian doctrine in a simple fashion "as a father should teach his children."

  2. An Explanation of Luther's Small Catechism-Concordia, 1991 - This version is an update of the 1943 Missouri Synod offering. While it offers much of excellence, some of its interpretations also serve to point out some of the doctrinal differences between LCMS and ELCA.

  3. An Explanation of Luther's Small Catechism-Stumpf, 1935 - A modern language examination of the doctrines of the Church as professed by the historic United Evangelical Lutheran Church at that time. Some of the teaching has become outdated as a result of cultural changes within the ELCA.

  4. Luther's Large Catechism - As the Small Catechism was aimed at householders, so the Luther targeted the clergy with the Large Catechism.
