This week, we join Christians throughout the world in praying for the unity of the whole Church of Christ. This annual observance of a week of Prayer for Christian Unity (actually an octave, or eight days) celebrates its 102nd anniversary in 2010. We pray in thanksgiving for the Brothers and Sisters at Graymoor Ecumenical Institue in Garrison, New York, who so seriously took up the prayer of Jesus "that they may all be one..."

The prayers of the faithful in these 102 years have certainly borne fruit. Within the Lutheran Church in North America, the merger of a number of groups with diverse roots formed the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The ELCA is an active partner with many other Christian denominations here in the United States, and around the world. Locally, The Genesee Finger Lakes Conference of the Upstate New York Synod is a member of the Greater Rochester Community of Churches.

This year's theme is based on the Gospel of Luke in the 24th Chapter...the encounter on the Road to Emmaus.

Join us in prayer and meditation on these scriptures this week...
